Should I tell my aunt?
My aunt gave my husband and me a second-hand bedroom set close to two years ago. I just found out it is from the Eames era and possibly worth thousands of dollars. She just gave it to us because she didn't want it anymore, but now that I know it's worth so much, I feel badly that she gave it to us for free. Should I tell her?
Um, are you selling it?
If so, "We couldn't believe this; I hope you don't mind we sold it, but we're so hard up; but I insist on your getting half the money." (Then, if she says no to the last, you can keep it all.)
If not, then, sure, ask if she realized how valuable it is, and how much more you appreciate it -- even though you have always LOVED it, but hadn't realized it was so valuable.
Or, you could just go on.
She wanted you to have it, she didn't want it any more.
But if you make a killing selling it, it would be best to offer to split the profits with her.
Notice, you left out a lot of relevant detail: whether she was partly giving it to you as a familyheirloom; whether you're selling it; whether you think she'd WANT some of the money for it, or all the money, or none.
It's best when you give a complete picture of what's going on, as then we can give better advice.
If she found out five years from now you sold it, would she be hurt you didn't keep it? Be mad you didn't share the wealth? Be happy you got big bucks?
