I agree with BoshTalk, except one thing - Andrea Mantegna first used aerial perspective, his painting of st. Sebastian is a good example if you feel like googleing it.
What makes a painting special is how the public reacts to it. For instance, while van Dyke is a fantastic painter and master of composition his painting lack general appeal to the untrained eye. Mona Lisa has struck a cord with the masses for generations. What's important is that a painting "speaks to you" - while Mona Lisa is a schoolbook example of good composition, perspective and portrait painting - if enough people like it strongly enough for a long period of time, it's going to be considered a master piece, be it a masterfully done painting or Coca-Cola ad.
