I'm doing a cost benefit analysis for houses we're looking at buying in Bath. I need an approximate cost of an attic conversion of a Victorian/Edwardian terraced house in Bath. E.g. the type of house in Poets Corner. This would involve putting in stairs, adding velux windows and either having 1 bedroom or 1 bedroom plus a small en suite bathroom.

Buying a house, no matter if it's your second or first (or more) nor what kind and for how much, is a big investment. Asking for help here on Yah is a good step, but not enough when it comes to a big-ticket item like a house purchase. In short, you need the assessment of a local house pro in your area to see what you are getting into, specifically to see what can be done with the house you intend to buy as to the conversion and what have you. So, with that said, and given the remodeling intention you have, I'd seek the advice of local remodeling contractors--they have the local knowledge that you need, as to what you can do with the house, the local products available, the local rate and costs, etc.
While you still have not bought your house, I think it is perfectly reasonable and okay to meet with a local remodeling contractor out in front of the house to allow the contractor the benefit of seeing the house you intend to buy first hand. There's no obligation on your part if you seek one of the many local remodeling contractors in your area who are willing to provide free estimates. Relying on guesses found here on Yah is not recommended, as many factors--including that material and labor costs vary by location--affect the cost of what you are intending to do.
