Who knows what kinds of small backyard toadstools are safe & will grow?
In a shady area of my backyard, I discovered a section of very small toadstools or mushrooms (wild) that were growing underneath some indigenous weeds (mostly spreading dandelions). They were in miniature groupings, and very cute-looking! I put some delicately into a pot with some of the same soil, but not sure which is safe for growing as-a-hobby indoors for little pots, dishes, or terrariums. Any suggestions or warnings?
Anyone who can call mushrooms "very cute looking", is a fellow mycophile and friend of mine. The only mushroom I've had good luck growing indoors in a terrarium is the Reishi mushroom. It forms exotic gnarled forms which sell as art, as well as an herbal tonic. The little mushrooms you brought in are the equivalent of a cut flower and very very short lived. I too pick wild mushrooms and try planting them in my gardens. The next time you bring one home, try to place it and some of the soil in an area similar to the area you found them. This gives two chances of success, mycelium (roots) in the soil and spores (seeds) from the mushrooms gills. To complicate things a little, some mushrooms form symbiotic relationships with trees and other green plants. So if you find your mushrooms under an oak, they may not grow under a maple.
