I took my corso to a trainer. (any additional tips?)?
ok my 8 moth old cane corso is way over aggressive. I am taking her to a trainer to help fix this. I was wondering if there are any tips that could help. I love her but she literally wants to kill anything that she doesn't know very well. I have to lock her in her crate when my kids friends come over. I was wondering if there was a way I could introduce her to people so she wouldn't attack them.
AND DON'T TELL ME TO GET RID OF MY DOG!!
Generally speaking, this breed is protective but NOT overly aggressive. However, Some lines have a very high prey drive and can prove difficult to socialize. Most of mine have been correct temperment, but a couple have been very high drive dogs both male and female.
First things first...take a look at the way you interact with others and with your dog. Any dog will often mirror the energy of the house and of the owner. Display calm and confidence..asserting yourself as the pack leader. Praise occurs only with good behavior, and punishment should be nonviolent and calm. *do not allow the puppy to "play bite" with anyone. Correct with firm but calm "no bite" ...be consistent. You can submit the dog belly up with your body weight. YOu have to take control like a her mother would.
Secondly, get a good collar, a good leash 4'-6'max, and a pinch collar. Your trainer can show you how to employ the pinch collar, not allowing the dog to pull and choke itself, but using a "popping motion" to give instant correction.
Next, EXERCISE:) Daily walks with your dog will rid the animal of pent up energy and help to bring about physical and psycological balance. This also serves as an opporotunity to work obedience.
Lastly, remember, the dog is still a puppy! She is figuring out what is acceptable and expected of her. It is your duty to show her how, in a kind and calm manner. YOu should definately sociallize the dog with older children!!!..but only in a controled manner. This means you are there as the pack leader, kids are calm, and the dog is not allowed to dominate the situation. The worst thing you can do is lock your dog away. Bordom and isolation WILL create psycological and behavioral issues that will be hard to undo.
This breed will typically settle down after 2 years. Good luck, and message me with any questions.
