Need advice concerning an antique Oak Library table?
I recently found an antique oak library table (15.00 dollars in good condition), the top had been replaced with cheap plastic veneer, I removed the veneer, still trying to get the rubber cement off. How should I go about replacing the top oak piece over the boards? Thanks
Mineral spirits or paint thinner should remove the rubber cement.
If by replacing the top you mean re-veneering it, you will need to sand the top smooth and fill any gaps and cracks in the substrate (boards).
You will need to get a piece of oak veneer (usually white oak) that will cover the to top (it may take 2 or more). Get white oak veneer at a lumber yard (not a big box store) and not red oak as red oak is too porous to make a good top to write on. Next get a j-roller and some liquid hide glue (Titebond makes it). Spread the glue (it is slow setting so good for this use). Place the veneer (1/2" over hang) and use the j-roller to press it flat and get any air bubbles out. Let cure 24 hours. Use a trim router and flush trim bit to trim the edges. Lightly sand and apply varnish.
