Police hold 'safe plate surgeries' to combat epidemic of number plate theft
The theft of vehicle number plates is increasing in the UK, with particular hot spots where police are issuiing warnings and advising motorists to use special security screws and other precautions to protect their plates.
Police in the north of England are particularly concerned about the actions of gangs and individual thieves targeting number plates and metals such as lead which have a high scrap value. The stolen number plates are being used to disguise the identities of vehicles in driveaway thefts of petrol from filling stations.
Great London is a hot spot also, with many opportunistic stealing of plates to disguise vehicles and avoid congestion and parking charges.
The problem is so serious that in Greater Manchester police have been running ‘safe plate surgeries' outside supermarkets to demonstrate how to fit special anti-tamper screws to make it difficult for number plates to be stolen.
"Offenders steal number plates to clone cars to commit other crimes such as driving off from petrol stations without paying, and in robberies," according to Crime Reduction Advisor Gaynor Mason.
"Victims might not be aware of what has happened until speeding and parking tickets start arriving in the post. They can then have difficulty convincing authorities that it was not their car being used."
'Motorists must be vigilant'
Inspector Mark Kenny of Bury Police warns: "It takes just a few seconds to unscrew the plates held on with conventional screws and thieves often carry out this simple crime in places like supermarket car parks. This can be done while you are buying a lunchtime sandwich or doing your weekly shop. If your number plates have been stolen, you can be sure that they will be put on to another vehicle.
"If you do become a victim, please ensure that you tell us as soon as possible so we can record the information on the Police National Computer. This will allow any patrolling officers who stop a vehicle with your registration to make further checks to confirm its identity. Equally I would urge motorists to keep a vigilant watch on their vehicles at all times and report anything suspicious to us straight away.
"We welcome this initiative, which should be extended throughout the UK," says Des Elton, CEO of Speedyreg.co.uk, one of the leading suppliers of cherished number registrations. Public sector cutbacks increase problems
"We update the Speedyreg database every 24 hours, but with all the cutbacks in the public sector this is not always possible and more human errors seems to be creeping in as backroom staff are reduced in police and local authorities."
Des Elton also urges motorists, homeowners and private sector companies to respond to police requests for intelligence on number plate thefts. The police urge the public to report any unusual behaviour in their locality, such as vans driving slowly up and down and people paying particular interest to homes and business premises where vehicles are parked for long periods.
