Where to get rolling step ladder for work that rolls while standing on it?
I have arthritis, work in a grocery store, and sometimes have to go up & down a ladder hundreds of times in a shift. Is there a step ladder on wheels that will roll even when I'm on the steps? For safety, I'm guessing there'd be a brake/lock that can be foot pressed or something similar. Any ideas where to find such a thing and how much it might be? Thx!
There are similar ladders used in libraries, but I have serious doubts that they would work in a grocery store. The library top shelves have a 'track' or a groove set into them so that the ladder is much less likely to fall. Grocery store shelves don't have that feature.
You should really give some thought into asking your store manager to be transfered to a ground level department instead of being a shelf-stocker. You don't mention your age (which is fine), but arthritis is something that seems to kick in as people get older. (I'm getting older too - I'm 46 - and I'm starting to feel the beginnings of it. My mom had it really bad. IDK if it's genetic or not). But anyways, I think you are taking a BIG risk if you continue to do that kind of work up high on ladders. One fall and you might be talking about a broken hip.
Even if you COULD find such a ladder, I don't see why that would eliminate the need for you to go up and down 'hundreds of times per shift'. It's not like you could lift 5 boxes of goods up at one time - you would still have to go up down up down. I feel that you should talk to your manager and see if he/she can put a younger person on the duty for the higher-up shelves. You need to be on solid ground or at the most standing on a milk crate to do the lower and mid-level shelves.

I've worked in grocery stores for decades. Just by reading your story, if I was the store manager, I would implement the changes I have suggested. You are a SERIOUS fall risk. To the company, that equals a huge potential liability in the event of a lawsuit. I'm not saying that I would fire you - I'm just saying that I would find you a job within the store where you wouldn't be at such risk of personal injury.
