engine too big for a cafe racer style?
i have a '79 honda CB1100F that's been sitting in my dad's yard for a good while and i decided i want to make it into a cafe racer. i go down to my local custom shop and they tell me that the engine is too big for a cafe racer style bike. i'm not a purist who likes to keep things traditional/original so i'm going to make it a cafe racer regardless but has anyone heard of certain engines being too big for a cafe racer style bike? and if so, why would it be a problem?
First off, there is no '79 CB1100F. It was only made for the 1983 model year. So you may be talking about a CBX, which has 6 cylinders. Go to Google, and select "Images", and search for "CBX". There are tons of photos of customized versions.
I guess they're being purists at the shop you went to. Traditional cafe-style bikes are singles or twins, just like the old Brit bikes were. But check out this photo of one of my bikes. It's a 1981 CB750F, bored out to 836cc. Very similar to the CB1100F. Just to give you an idea.

EDIT: Oops! I forgot to mention this important facet: Both the CBX and the CB1100F are quite collectible. They are worth more if kept as close to original as is practical, or modified in such a way that the process is reversible--and keep any parts that you remove! Current value of a quality CB1100F is about $4,000, and going up. 1983 retail was $3,698. A 1979 CBX is worth more than the CB1100F.
