Not too sweet white cake and frosting?
I am making a cake for my birthday and bringing it to my asian family.
They always complain that cake is too sweet, so I need a recipe that isn't too sweet so they will eat it.
I'm making a layered cake, 3-4 layers, and am willing to make it more than once to make the layers.
ALSO i need a frosting that isn't too sweet.

White Cake
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup Crisco shortening (white preferably)
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk or milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Set oven to 350 degrees. Set oven rack to second-lowest position. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan, and line bottom of pan with parchment paper. In a medium or large bowl, with an electric mixer, cream the sugar and shortening until no granules remain (about 4 minutes).
Add in eggs and almond extract (if using); beat very well for 5 minutes on high speed. In a small bowl sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add to the creamed mixture along with the buttermilk; mix well until blended (about 2-3 minutes). Transfer to a prepared baking pan.
Bake on second-lowest oven rack for 30-35 minutes (check for doneness after 25 minutes, this cake bakes fast!).

Buttercream Icing
Makes: About 3 cups of icing.
This Buttercream Icing recipe is perfect for spreading or decorating. Follow our instructions to make it the ideal consistency you need.
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine softened
1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (approximately 1 pound)
2 tablespoons milk
For Medium Spread Consistency
In large bowl, cream shortening and butter with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.
For best results, keep icing bowl in refrigerator when not in use. Refrigerated in an airtight container, this icing can be stored 2 weeks. Rewhip before using.
Thin Spreading Consistency
For thin spreading consistency icing, add 2 tablespoons light corn syrup, water or milk.
For Pure White Icing – Stiff Consistency
For stiff consistency, omit butter; substitute an additional 1/2 cup shortening for butter and add 1/2 teaspoon No-Color Butter Flavor. Add up to 4 tablespoons light corn syrup, water or milk to thin for icing cakes.

Yields 2 ½ cups
2 foil wrapped bars (4 ounces) Nestle unsweetened chocolate baking bars
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cup (1 pound) confectioners' sugar
1/2-2/3 cup milk
In small, heavy-gauge saucepan, combine Nestle unsweetened chocolate baking bars and butter. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until baking bars melt and mixture is smooth.
Transfer to large mixer bowl; cool to room temperature. Add vanilla and salt. Beat in confectioners' sugar alternately with milk; beat until desired spreading consistency.
