Tile Flooring Installation Isn't For Everyone
Tile flooring installation is a big project to take on your own. It can be done, but it's much easier with the help of family and friends or simply hire a professional installer to do it and save a lot of time and energy. But if you are certain that you want to tackle tile flooring installation on your home, here is how you are going to do it.
First, you have to completely remove any current flooring that is down. Start with removing the baseboards carefully or you will have to replace them. Then pull up the carpet, old tiles, linoleum, or whatever the current flooring is. You need to get to the subfloor in order to have a really good installation that you will be proud of and enjoy for many years. Once you have the old stuff removed, give the floor a really good cleaning. Sweep, mop and vacuum for the best results. Make sure your subfloor is even. If not, you need to fix it, fill in any gaps, dips, or cracks until you have a level surface.
So, that doesn't sound so bad so far. Now the back breaking work arrives in tile flooring installation, but in the long run you will have a gorgeous floor that you can really enjoy. You have already measured your floor and ordered the tile. In fact, it's probably been sitting on the porch for a while during which time you were preparing for the job. Go back into the room and measure the floor again. Start at the middle of the doorway and go straight to the opposite wall. Snap a chalk line and lay your tile along this line. When you get to the opposite wall, lay a row along the wall. Make sure you have about a quarter to half of an inch of space between the wall and the tile. Use spacers to keep it straight. Remember, this is a dry run; you aren't using any form of adhesive yet.
Finally, it's time to actually start laying the tile with adhesive. Always start in the center of the room to make certain that full tiles are in the middle of the room. Put down a 2 X 2 foot section of adhesive using a notched trowel to spread the adhesive. Lay the tile into the adhesive, tapping it with a rubber mallet to keep it level, and using the spacers to keep it straight. Continue to do this until you have the floor covered.
If you have areas near the edge where a full tile won't fit, you will need to use a tile cutter or tile cutting saw to cut the tile to fit. You can rent these or purchase them. Once you have all the tile down and even let it set for 24 hours. The next day, remove the spacers and apply the grout to the entire floor. Using a grout scraper, scrape up all the surface grout making sure not to pull too much from between the tiles. A quick wipe with a damp sponge will remove the rest of the grout. Let the floor sit for 72 hours before allowing traffic through it. After three weeks, apply a grout sealer to protect your floor. You have finally completed your tile flooring installation project.
If you feel, though, that this project is too taxing physically, or a little too confusing, hire a professional to do the job for you. After all, you want your tile flooring installation to look beautiful for many years and if you don't think you can do the job justice, it's always best to rely on the professionals.
